EDUCATION/HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

The Sub-committee has reiterated the industry's stand that insurers must invest in human capital development especially in the development of technical skills. The role of the Malaysian Insurance Institute (MII) is prominent in this development and the industry will continue to place high expectations on MII as the premier insurance educational and training institution of the industry.

The Sub-committee has noted the importance to push forward measures that can be introduced to complement both members' and MII's efforts to enhance human capital development. Active interaction with members and MII to identify challenges facing the insurance industry on human capital development was done through a gaps analysis exercise where the key areas identified for attention were the general insurance industry's training requirements, marketing and branding of the general insurance industry as an employer of choice and human resource challenges faced by insurance companies. In this survey, members were also requested to propose key initiatives and action plans to address these challenges.

At follow-up fora with HR Managers, several action plans were mapped out. Some of these action plans are more suitably undertaken by individual member companies whereas others will require collective industry efforts via the Association. Key action plans requiring collective efforts are to re-brand the general insurance industry as an attractive employer of choice and the second area highlighted was the need for proper talent management. In this regard, the Education/HRD Sub-committee has formed a Talent Management Think-Tank Group which will look at initiatives on talent management in the general insurance industry. The Sub-committee is also initiating several action plans on rebranding of the insurance industry including reviewing collaterals on career opportunities in the insurance industry and collaborating with institutions of higher learning that have insurance as a major discipline to promote careers in insurance. The MII has also been requested to consider developing talent management programs for emerging leaders in the insurance industry.
