MIROS And Piam Strengthen Partnership To Enhance Road Safety Through Research And Industry Collaboration
KUALA LUMPUR, 21 OCTOBER 2026 – The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and the General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen road safety initiatives through data-driven research, technical collaboration and knowledge sharing. The signing took place in conjunction with Transport Expo Asia (TXA) 2026 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), Kuala Lumpur.
The MoU was signed by MIROS Director General, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Siti Zaharah binti Ishak, and PIAM CEO, Chua Kim Soon. The signing was witnessed by YB Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport Malaysia, in the presence of MIROS Chairman, Professor Dr. Wong Shaw Voon, and PIAM Chairman, Ng Kok Kheng.
This partnership bridges MIROS’s research expertise with the general insurance industry’s deep knowledge and experience to support more targeted road crash prevention initiatives. Emphasis is placed on understanding risk factors and leveraging evidence-based approaches to design interventions that enhance road user safety.
MIROS Director General, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Siti Zaharah binti Ishak, said, “This collaboration creates an avenue for MIROS and the general insurance industry to gain a deeper understanding of road safety risks. Through targeted research and data analysis, we can identify intervention priorities and evaluate their effectiveness. The goal is to ensure that research findings are translated into actionable measures that help prevent road crashes and reduce injuries.”
Under the MoU, MIROS and PIAM will collaborate across three strategic pillars: data analytics and research, safety ratings and technology adoption, and advocacy, education and capacity building.
In the area of research, both parties will explore collaboration in data analysis and road safety studies to better understand risks and support the planning of more effective interventions. This partnership also encompasses efforts to promote the adoption of technology, assessment methodologies, and road safety rating programmes, thereby strengthening industry participation in implementing evidence-based safety initiatives.
PIAM Chairman Ng Kok Kheng remarked, “For decades, general insurers have been at the forefront of handling accident claims and helping our policyholders through the aftermath of road collisions. Beyond claim support and consumer education, PIAM is taking the next decisive step towards comprehensive, proactive risk mitigation. Strengthening our long-standing partnership with MIROS empowers the general insurance industry to contribute directly to national safety goals through evidence-based insights, strategic advocacy, and modern technological adoption."
Through this collaboration, MIROS and PIAM aim to expand the application of research findings in implementing road safety interventions, ultimately contributing to the reduction of road fatalities and injuries for the well-being of the Malaysian public.
